The effort to rebuild Liberia's health system, which was devastated by 14 years of civil war, has now reached a critical and potentially destabilizing phase. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from the United States and other countries have played a significant role in addressing healthcare needs, with a primary focus on infectious diseases such as malaria, maternal and infant care, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. However, a significant decentralization policy has greatly impacted Liberia's largest population group, those living in rural areas.
In rural Liberia, the risk factors for non-communicable diseases remain high. The Nyonblee Cares Foundation's mobile clinic, in operation since 2011, has proven to be a functional and effective method of delivering healthcare. Health professional teams from the foundation often travel for hours to reach nearby centralized areas, where they provide basic health screenings, medications, and health education. The journey for critical care patients is particularly challenging, often requiring them to be carried in hammocks to the nearest road for transportation to a clinic. The death rate from curable illnesses remains alarmingly high, underscoring the urgent need for sustained support and development of the healthcare infrastructure in Liberia.
The Nyonblee Cares Foundation’s mobile clinic has become a beacon of hope, delivering life-saving healthcare services to the most vulnerable populations in Liberia. This program primarily impacts women and children and has treated over 15,000 patients in remote, hard-to-reach villages with limited access to healthcare due to the lack of roads and hospitals. In these communities, the clinic's presence and dedicated care are crucial for survival.
